A SKETCH OF THE DYNAMICS OF WAR-MAKING

Two contributions to Counselling and Peace, British Association for Counselling, 1988.

This is an attempt to bring together a number of factors in social and individual psychology, in order to throw light on the process of making war. Only certain salient influences are mentioned, and there is, of course, no intention to imply, for instance, that all bad peri-natal experience is due to stress on parents. Nor is it implied that childhood trauma is not important. Rather the reader is invited to use the diagram as a map on which to locate whatever factors are regarded as significant.

Sketches 1

Possible tasks for counsellors: (1) help separate rational anger from half-buried infantile anger;
  (2) help find some sense of own reality;
  (3) help heal the split (D Wasdell area).

A SKETCH OF THE DYNAMICS OF PEACE-MAKING

A similar attempt to illuminate the process of making peace. The political starting-point is taken to be the same as in the former diagram: socio-economic oppression. Any possible change in this situation will then be able to be seen as the result of the political activity for justice and peace mentioned at the foot of this diagram.

Sketches 2

Possible tasks for counsellors: (4) help person to ground ecstasy;
  (5) help them to face the terror and rage: J Macy area;
  (6) emotional re-education through therapy;
  (7) work in the D Rowe area.
